Collio DOC Welcomes Orange Wines to Production Standards

Collio DOC integrates orange wines into its production specifications, paving the way for a new wine category with global significance.

Introduction to Collio’s New Wine Category

In a groundbreaking move, the Collio DOC has officially integrated orange wines into its production specifications. This decision was finalized during the consortium’s recent assembly in December 2022, marking a significant evolution in one of Italy’s most esteemed wine regions. Known for its commitment to quality and tradition, Collio has historically been recognized as the birthplace of modern orange wine, thanks to pioneering producers like Gravner and Radikon. The addition of orange wines represents not just an expansion of Collio’s offerings but also a pivotal moment in the global appreciation of this unique style.

The Journey Towards Integration

The integration of orange wines into Collio’s disciplinare has been discussed for several terms within the consortium but faced various challenges. According to Lavinia Zamaro, the consortium’s director, it wasn’t until 2022 that a renewed focus was placed on this initiative. Key contributors included a newly elected board dedicated to resolving this long-standing issue and pressures from Valoritalia, the certification body urging clearer definitions for skin-contact wines.

A technical committee was formed from both member and non-member companies involved in producing these innovative wines. Their collaborative efforts spanned two years and culminated in a decisive vote that approved the inclusion of orange wines into Collio’s production specifications.

Defining Orange Wines in Collio

While specific technical details are still being finalized, several key elements have already been established for the new category. For instance, the maximum level of volatile acidity will mirror that of red wines at 20 milliequivalents per liter. Additionally, all orange wines must undergo a minimum maceration time of seven days, a crucial factor in developing their distinctive flavors and characteristics.

One innovative aspect is the introduction of color codification using the Pantone scale. This system allows for transparent evaluation by Valoritalia without subjective interpretation. As Zamaro explains, "This is completely new not just for Collio but also for many denominations across Italy."

Labeling Innovations and Consumer Clarity

In an effort to enhance consumer understanding and choice, the exact Pantone tonality will be indicated on labels alongside traditional indicators like sweetness levels found on Alsatian wines. Potential label names such as Vino da Uve Macerate or Vino Ottenuto con Macerazione will likely be adopted, although there are no plans to use the more widely recognized term ‘orange’ as part of this designation.

This labeling innovation aims to demystify orange wines for consumers unfamiliar with them while promoting informed purchasing decisions based on visual cues about what each bottle represents.

Addressing Concerns from Traditionalists

Despite widespread support for integrating orange wines into Collio’s repertoire—passing with a firm majority of 72%—the decision wasn’t without its critics. Some producers expressed concerns regarding confusion among consumers accustomed to Collio’s traditionally “pure” style characterized by crispness and salinity in white winemaking.

Zamaro acknowledges these concerns but emphasizes that recognizing skin-contact practices is crucial given their historical significance within the region. She notes significant international interest in macerated wines indicates that public demand exists despite internal reservations among some local producers.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for Orange Wines in Collio

As Collio prepares for its first Vini da Uve Macerate following bureaucratic approvals expected to take about a year, there is palpable excitement within both producers and wine enthusiasts alike. The integration reflects not only a commitment to innovation but also respect for traditional practices that have defined this iconic Italian region.

With increasing global interest surrounding skin-contact methods and unique flavor profiles associated with orange wines, it seems clear that this new category will enhance both the diversity of offerings from Collio DOC and enrich consumer experiences around these remarkable expressions.
