News Tasting the Unseen: Wines of Altra Toscana Revealed by Olivier Watson February 20, 2025 3 min 1 If you love discovering hidden wine gems, you must explore Altra Toscana's stunning offerings. Dive into these unforgettable flavors!Discovering Altra Toscana’s Hidden Treasures When it comes to wine, many enthusiasts gravitate towards the well-trodden paths of renowned regions. However, it’s in places like Altra Toscana where the magic often lies undiscovered. At a recent tasting event held at Palazzo degli Affari in Florence, a selection of wines from Carmignano, Chianti Rùfina, Cortona, Maremma Toscana, and Toscani IGT took center stage. As I sipped through these exquisite offerings during a blind tasting session, I was instantly captivated by the unique stories and flavors each wine told. Why You Shouldn’t Overlook Carmignano Carmignano is home to some truly spectacular wines that are often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors. Among my favorites from this region was the Carmignano Riserva Elzana 2021 from Fattoria Ambra—its depth and complexity felt like embracing an old friend after years apart. Then there’s the Barco Reale di Carmignano Rosso Barbocchio 2024; it offers juicy fruit notes combined with a hint of earthiness that dances on your palate. These wines invite exploration not just for their taste but also for their rich history and character—a perfect example being Vin Santo Carmignano Occhio di Pernice 2015, which had an extraordinary sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity. The Allure of Chianti Rùfina Next on my journey through Tuscany was the Chianti Rùfina selection. I found myself entranced by the Riserva Terraelectae Vigna alla Stele 2020 from Frascole—an embodiment of elegance with its layered tannins that whisper tales of berry fruits and subtle oak influence. It’s hard to find such quality without bumping elbows with international fame!Volevo sequestrarti al mondo intero, ai dischi tristi, ai diversivi, ai locali , dal vino e dalla felicità. Volevo sequestrati anche a Dio, perché tu fossi solamente mia. Highlights include: Chianti Rùfina Riserva Terraelectae Vigna Le Rogaie 2021 – Colognole Chianti Rùfina Riserva Terraelectae Vigna Montesodi 2021 – Frescobaldi Each sip tells a story of passionate winemakers dedicated to preserving traditional techniques while innovating responsibly—a delicate dance between respect for heritage and bold creativity. Cortona’s Unique Expression I then turned my attention to Cortona’s celebrated Syrah varieties which added another layer to this delightful tapestry. The Syrah Bocca di Selva 2021 from Tenuta Angelici caught me off guard; it presented vibrant black fruit complemented by intriguing spice notes that linger long after swallowing—a truly captivating experience! Even now, reminiscing about it makes my mouth water.
