Founded by Pauline and Géraud Fromont, this hidden gem offers quality and authenticity.Discovering the Marnes Blanches Estate: A Hidden Gem in Jura Nestled in Sainte-Agnès, near Rotalier, lies the Marnes Blanches estate. This vineyard has been producing exceptional organic and natural wines for over fifteen years. The estate is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts, offering remarkable quality at reasonable prices. Founded by a passionate couple, Pauline and Géraud Fromont, the estate began its journey in 2008. Both hailing from Jura, they met while studying viticulture and oenology in Davayé. Their shared vision led them to create a vineyard that reflects their commitment to authenticity and terroir. The couple’s experiences shaped their philosophy. They learned what they wanted to avoid: wines laden with additives that mask the true essence of the land. Géraud initially took over four hectares of vines in Cesancey, planting five traditional Jura grape varieties. The estate’s name, Marnes Blanches, is derived from the unique soil of certain vineyard parcels. In 2011, Pauline joined Géraud, and together they expanded their vineyard into neighboring communes. Their dedication to organic practices has been unwavering, with certification achieved in 2013. A Commitment to Organic and Biodynamic Practices The Marnes Blanches vineyard spans 16 hectares, with additional parcels in Arbois and Étoile. The average age of the vines is around forty years, with some over a century old. The estate cultivates traditional grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau. Additionally, they grow rare varieties like Melon à Queue Rouge and Savagnin Muscaté. Interestingly, the estate produces more white wines than reds, showcasing the region’s unique terroir. Since its inception, the estate has adhered to organic farming principles. They also incorporate some biodynamic practices, although they do not seek certification. For instance, they use herbal infusions to promote vine health. Géraud explains their careful use of copper and sulfur, adjusting based on the sensitivity of each parcel. This year, unpredictable weather required more copper than usual, highlighting the delicate balance they maintain. To adapt to climate change, they employ a two-stage pruning process, allowing for better vineyard management. Natural Winemaking: A Philosophy of Minimal Intervention In the cellar, the Marnes Blanches team embraces a philosophy of minimal intervention. They rely on indigenous yeasts for fermentation, avoiding the use of new oak barrels. Instead, they utilize a variety of containers, including 228-liter and 500-liter barrels, foudres, concrete eggs, and amphorae. This approach allows for parcel-specific vinification, enhancing the expression of each wine. Notably, no sulfur is added during fermentation or aging, with only a homeopathic dose sometimes used at bottling for certain whites. The wines produced at Marnes Blanches are a true reflection of their terroir. They embody a pure, fresh style, characterized by depth and vibrancy. Among their offerings is the Macvin, a liqueur wine that balances freshness with smoothness. The Crémant Réserve, made from Chardonnay, showcases a perfect harmony between creamy texture and refreshing acidity. Other notable wines include the expressive Côtes-du-Jura En Quatre Vis and the rich, aromatic Côtes-du-Jura Vin de Paille. Each bottle tells a story of the land, the couple’s dedication, and their commitment to quality. media: Idealwine – iDealwine Vagabond Wines Names New Managing Director November 12, 2024 7 Flavorful Fermentation Secrets with Sebastian Tollius November 20, 2024 6 Thanksgiving Cocktails Inspired by Classic Side Dishes November 9, 2024 7 source: Idealwine – Domaine des Marnes Blanches : « le futur du Jura s’écrit ici. » (La Rvf) Winery Olivier Watson Olivier Watson is a passionate food and travel enthusiast with a particular fondness for rosé wine.
