News Why I Embrace Veganism Without Extremes by Olivier Watson January 29, 2025 3 min 0 Discover how I balance veganism with a love for quality ingredients! Red Canzian shares insights that challenge typical vegan narratives.A Personal Journey into Veganism Veganism has become a hot topic, but my approach is a bit different. It’s not just about avoiding animal products; it’s about conscious choices and quality ingredients. My journey started in 2009 when I fully embraced veganism, although I hadn’t eaten meat since 1996 due to health issues. It wasn’t an overnight decision but rather a gradual awakening of my conscience regarding food and its origins. I remember vividly the moment I decided to stop eating meat. After suffering from painful kidney stones during a tour, I realized that my body was sending me signals. It wasn’t just about ethical concerns; it was also about my health. Now, I choose to enjoy eggs and cheese from local farmers who treat their animals humanely because quality matters. The Ethics of Eating Being vegan doesn’t mean you have to be extreme or judgmental. Sure, many people see things in black and white, but I believe in shades of grey. If you know where your food comes from—like free-range eggs or cheese from cows raised on lush pastures—it changes everything. It’s fascinating how some vegans can be very dogmatic. For me, enjoying a piece of artisanal cheese made by a small farmer doesn’t make me less committed to my values. In fact, understanding the source of our food enhances our appreciation for it. Navigating Social Dynamics at the Table Dining out as a vegan can sometimes feel like walking through a minefield! I’ve dined with friends who eat meat without judgment and vice versa. It’s essential to respect each other’s choices at the table. If someone enjoys steak while I savor my vegetable dish, that’s perfectly okay! In fact, my daughter Chiara dabbled in veganism too; she inspires me with her thoughtful approach to food choices. We often share meals where everyone’s preferences are catered to—it’s about community over conflict. The Importance of Quality Over Quantity Quality is paramount in every meal we prepare or enjoy. I’ve learned that it’s not necessary to fill up on cheap processed foods just because they’re labeled vegan. True sustenance comes from seasonal vegetables and whole grains—simple yet delicious! Compared to what we have in Italy, theirs is rich and flavorful—not the bland blocks we often see here. The Wine Connection: Savoring Every Sip As for wine? Yes! I love indulging in wines crafted with integrity using plant-based clarifiers instead of animal products like egg whites. I’ve made some wines myself as a hobby but always prioritize quality over quantity; it’s all about enjoying life’s finer things responsibly. The Malaroja from Donne Fittipaldi is one of my favorites—a perfect pairing for my ideal dinner: good bread, cheese from ethical producers, and laughter shared among friends. A Plant-Based Legacy In essence, being vegan isn’t just about what you eat; it’s about living well and respecting the planet we inhabit together. From embracing traditional Italian dishes that are naturally plant-based to sharing stories over meals that highlight compassion over cruelty, this lifestyle reflects more than diet—it embodies our values as human beings.
