Remembering Evelyne de Pontbriand: A Legacy in Wine

Evelyne de Pontbriand passed away in Angers on November 5, following a sudden illness. She was a prominent figure in Savennières, Anjou, and her life was marked by many transformations. Initially, she taught literature and lived abroad, but in 2001, she returned to her roots. Evelyne took over the family estate, Domaine du Closel, from her mother, Michèle Bazin de Jessey.

Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious. She dedicated herself to revitalizing a vineyard with origins dating back to the 15th century. Under her leadership, the estate transitioned to organic farming and later to biodynamic practices. By 2015, she achieved biodynamic certification, showcasing her commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Evelyne believed in the importance of biodiversity. She initiated agroforestry programs to enhance the vineyard’s ecosystem. Her passion for the Chenin grape, the king of Anjou, was evident in her work. In 2019, she played a pivotal role in organizing the first global Chenin congress, where she served as president.

Innovative Winemaking Techniques

Evelyne de Pontbriand left a significant mark on winemaking. She adopted a fresh approach to enhance the finesse of her wines. Notably, she limited sulfur use and exclusively utilized indigenous yeasts. This innovative method resulted in wines that truly reflected their terroir.

In 2021, a vertical tasting of her flagship cuvée, Clos du Papillon, showcased her progress. Wine enthusiasts had the opportunity to experience the evolution of her craft. The tasting highlighted the depth and complexity of her wines, which were a testament to her dedication.

Evelyne’s commitment to quality was unwavering. She constantly sought ways to improve her winemaking process. Her legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of winemakers.

A Charismatic Presence

Evelyne de Pontbriand was not just a winemaker; she was a vibrant personality. She traveled the world, connecting with wine lovers and sharing her passion. Her charisma and humor made her a beloved figure in the wine community.

I had the pleasure of meeting her in Hong Kong during a wine fair. Her joy for life was contagious, and her stories were captivating. Evelyne’s courage and resilience served as an inspiration to many.

The iDealwine team extends heartfelt condolences to her family. Her memory will live on through her contributions to the world of wine. Evelyne de Pontbriand’s legacy is one of passion, innovation, and connection.
