The Journey of Winemaking: A Legacy in Ravera

The story of Valter and Nadia Cogno is one of passion and perseverance. Their journey began in 1984, when they met on a bus during secondary school. Valter’s father-in-law, Elvio Cogno, managed Ristorante dell’Angelo in La Morra, but his true dream was to create exceptional wines. In 1990, he purchased land in Ravera, Novello, a decision that would shape the future of their family and winery.

Ravera, recognized as one of Barolo’s MGA since 2010, was an uncharted territory in the early 1990s. Valter and Elvio saw potential in this area, despite its lack of recognition. They believed in the unique terroir and its ability to produce remarkable wines. This bold choice laid the foundation for a legacy that would thrive for decades.

Initially, Valter worked alongside Elvio, gaining invaluable experience. Although he studied engineering, his family’s winemaking background in Roero influenced his path. The hard work began with restoring the farm, preparing it for vinification. Today, their vision remains unchanged, but their understanding of Ravera’s nuances has deepened significantly over the years.

Crafting Barolo: A Burgundy-Style Approach

The Cogno winery has adopted a unique approach to crafting Barolo. They produce four distinct Barolos from the same cru, reminiscent of Burgundy’s style. This method allows them to highlight the unique characteristics of each vineyard parcel. By analyzing the clones of Nebbiolo, vineyard age, soil types, and microclimates, they create wines that reflect the essence of Ravera.

Cascina Nuova, one of their flagship wines, serves as an educational Barolo. Valter believes that Barolo has become too expensive, making it essential for wine lovers to experience its true essence. This wine is an investment in accessibility, allowing consumers to appreciate the complexity and aging potential of Barolo Ravera.

The commitment to organic practices is a cornerstone of their philosophy. They prioritize the health of their vines and the environment, avoiding chemicals entirely. This dedication not only benefits the land but also enhances the quality of their wines. Over the years, they have shifted their approach to vine management, allowing the vineyards to produce naturally, resulting in a more authentic expression of the terroir.

The Evolution of Barolo: A Family Legacy

The evolution of Barolo has been a significant aspect of the Cogno family’s journey. Valter recalls the challenges of the 1990s, marked by difficult vintages. The climate posed obstacles, but the arrival of the 1995 vintage brought hope. Today, the perception of Barolo has transformed, with a greater emphasis on finesse and drinkability.

For over three decades, the Cogno family has dedicated themselves to enhancing the vineyards of Ravera. They believe that this exceptional sub-zone of Barolo is a contemporary cru, capable of producing wines that balance complexity and structure. The unique characteristics of Ravera contribute to the aging potential of their wines, making them a true reflection of the region.

Nadia’s involvement in the winery has further strengthened their legacy. Her early experiences with Barolo shaped her understanding of the wine’s evolution. Together, Valter and Nadia continue to honor their family’s heritage while embracing innovation. The Cogno winery stands as a testament to the enduring bond between family, land, and the art of winemaking.
